Children across the country are heading back to school, but this does not need to be a stressful time of the year. Parents are able to take several steps that will ensure that a child has a healthy start to a new school year. The following tips will help your child to succeed and have a healthy outlook on school.
1. Talk to your children about bullying. Discuss the steps that your child needs to take if they perceive that they are being bullied at school. Bullying has a major effect on self-esteem and can also have an impact on a child’s academic performance.
2. Pack a healthy lunch. Schools across the nation have tried to improve cafeteria menus, but you can ensure that your child is enjoying a satisfying and healthy meal by preparing it at home. Make sure to provide balanced nutrition mixed with some fun touches to put a smile on your child’s face. For example, cut their sandwich with a cookie cutter in the shape of their favorite animal.
3. Provide your child with all the necessary tools to succeed. If a teacher has a product suggestion for the child, make sure that you purchase it. Products are recommended for a reason; make sure that your child has everything necessary to enhance their learning experience.
4. Become an informed parent. Learn about the current health and safety procedures for your child’s school. For example, many schools are issuing new procedures in case of a swine flu outbreak. Make sure that you are knowledgeable about these new procedures.
5. Make learning fun. Try to have fun learning with your child outside of the classroom. If your child is struggling to learn about a specific topic, try to create a relevant reference to how that topic relates to their life. For example, if the child is struggling with fractions, relate the fraction to a slice of pizza. This will make learning more personal and will allow your child to remember the topic better.
6. Encourage communication with your child’s teacher. This is a vital step to ensure that your child is performing well in the classroom. Many teachers will not establish contact unless there is a problem with a student. If you periodically talk to your child’s teacher about their progress, you can get updates on areas that they excel in and places they can use a bit of improvement.
7. Set aside a designated time to complete homework every night. Setting a time will ensure that there are no arguments about whether homework needs to be completed before one activity or another. Setting a time will also ensure that your child is completing their homework and that they are able to receive help from you if they need it.
8. Make sure that your child is getting enough sleep. This is a very important factor in regards to your child’s academic performance. Children require more sleep than adults, so make sure they have an established routine for the time they go to bed and they time they wake up in the morning.
9. Feed your child a nutritious breakfast. A healthy and filling breakfast will allow your child to concentrate on the topics that are being covered in class, and not the rumbling of a hungry belly. A nutritious breakfast will keep them full and ready to learn until they can eat lunch at school.
10. Talk to your children about bus safety. For example, never to run in front of the bus. You should also teach them to check for other cars in the area of a bus stop. This is mostly a tip for parents with young children, but it is better to explain these safety tips to avoid any incidents.
Taking the above steps will prepare both you and your child for a healthy and successful new school year.
