Going green: uses for baking soda and vinegar around the house

Four uses for baking soda: in the home and for the body

For the last couple of years we have been hearing a lot about the green movement. I am trying to do my part to protect the environment by going green wherever I can. I have almost virtually done away with my old cleaning products. Where I used to use Comet cleanser, or something of that type, I now use plain old baking soda. I also use a lot of vinegar. I keep both apple cider vinegar and distilled vinegar.

I use distilled vinegar on my windows. My mom taught me a trick when I was just a young girl that vinegar was perfect to wash windows with. She had me use crumpled up newspapers to clean the glass with after spraying the glass with vinegar. It worked then before we ever knew about going green, so I use this method now.

When I clean my shower I sprinkle baking soda all over the bottom. Then I spray it with a good dousing of distilled vinegar. I leave it there to foam up, and go do something else for a while and then I come back and clean the shower. All the soap scum that accumulates in the shower each week comes right up without a problem. I use distilled vinegar on my shower doors too and clean them just like I clean the windows.

I also use baking soda in my drains. I pour baking soda into the sink and shower drains and follow it with vinegar. It foams up like crazy. I just leave it alone to work and later the drain is working fine. Last week we had an issue with our toilet. It got stopped up big time! My daughter and I plunged and plunged until our hands were sore and plunging didn’t do a thing. I thought of using baking soda and vinegar in the toilet. So I poured about half a box of baking soda into the toilet. I chased it down with about 2 cups (free poured it) of distilled vinegar. I let it sit in the toilet for about 30 minutes. I came back and plunged it and it was working better but not all the way. My hands were hurting, and so were my daughter’s so we left it for my son-in-law to work on. He did the same thing I did. He used the baking soda and vinegar method and let it sit. When he plunged it the clog completely cleared and the toilet has been functioning well since then.
