What is High Speed DSL Broadband?

Understanding Broadband and How To Increase its speed

A high speed DSL Internet connection is an increasingly standard service in the American home. This is because DSL broadband internet providers boast faster speeds than competing Internet services.

Digital subscriber lines, or DSL, is a type of technology that provides digital data transmission through a local telephone network. Initially, DSL stood for digital subscriber loop, but it was replaced by the term digital subscriber line, which has been more market-friendly.

A digital subscriber line can be used at the same time and share the same phone line with a standard telephone. The typical download speed of a consumer DSL service ranges from 256 kilobits per second to 24,000 kbits/s. DSL speed may vary according to the DSL technology, line conditions, and service level. If you are using an asymmetric digital subscriber line, the upload speed will be lower than the download speed. The upload speed will be equal to the download speed if you are using a symmetric digital subscriber line, or SDSL.

DSL works by dividing the frequencies in a single phone line into two sections called “bands.” The data from the Internet service provider will then be carried over the high-frequency band, which is usually at or above 25 kilohertz. The voice is carried over the low-frequency band at only 4 kilohertz or below.

When you subscribe to a DSL service, your Internet service provider will usually give you a DSL filter to install on each of your phone lines. The DSL filter will filter out the high frequencies from the phone line, allowing your phone to only send or receive the lower frequencies, which is the human voice. This allows the DSL modem and the normal telephone connection to be used at the same time without interference from one another. This is the reason DSL users can use their phone line for voice calls while connected to the Internet.

In addition to this, DSL is much faster than dial-up. Another advantage of using DSL is the fact that DSL doesn’t require any new complicated wiring scheme. You can use the phone line you already have to connect to a DSL connection.

DSL equipment consists of a DSL transceiver and a DSL Access Multiplexer, or DSLAM. The transceiver is basically a DSL modem, where data from the user’s computer or network is connected to the DSL line. The DSL transceiver, or modem can be connected via USB or Ethernet.

The DSL Access Multiplexer is located at the Internet service provider’s central office or operation room. A DSL Access Multiplexer takes connections from their customers and combines them into a single high-capacity connection to the Internet. The DSLAM equipment allows consumers to connect the Internet using their individual transceivers.
