Christmas is a special time of year for people of all ages. And what goes better with a holiday than music? No matter which search engine you use on today’s Internet, you will find an amazing array of “free” downloadable Christmas music. But…they’re not ALL truly free. The following websites have been tested and, if you follow the directions given here, they ARE truly free. Let’s get started!
Traditional Oldies:
Like listening to music of the 50’s? Try the SunStar website . These are .wav files for your MP3 player that pop up in Windows Media Player. This site opens up as a traditional Hawaiian music site, but don’t be fooled! Look at the top, center column of the page and you will see “go to LISTEN TO CHRISTMAS MUSIC DIRECTORY”. This brings you to a list of music available for free download…full versions, by popular artists from the 50’s and a few contemporary artists as well:
- O Holy Night by Nat King Cole
- Joy To The World by Johnny Mathis
- The First Noel by Andy Williams
- Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (instrumental) by Kenny G
- Mele Kalikimaka (traditional Hawaiian Christmas song)
Kids songs:
Want to download background music of popular songs that kids can sing along to? This site has printable lyrics so you can make your own Christmas music! Just download the instrumental music on Windows Media Player, print the sheet music, set up a mike and tape your own version. Go to www.xmasfun.com/lyrics.asp. There are also games, recipes and stories on this cute site. These are midi files. Just click on the musical note to hear the songs.
- Away in a Manger (Mellotron)
- Frosty the Snowman (Xylophone and piano)
Contemporary artists:
Want something old with a new twist? Try visiting www.Christmasmpfree.com. Here you can download songs and ringtones from contemporary artists. You’ll find MP3 files, midi files, and sheet music as well.
- Angels We Have Heard on High (Sixpence None the Richer)
- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (Jars of Clay)
Spanish versions:
This last site takes some work, and you have to pay close attention to the screens, but it is totally free and has a TON of free Christmas music! I chose 4 old-time favorite, but there are plenty more. There are also Redneck Christmas songs and a whole list of other genres for Christmas. www.ez.tracks.com.
The first thing it asks for is your email address, then an agreement, then a survey for 1000 free songs, etc. At the bottom of every page, just click on NO THANKS to get to the next screen. Once you have made it to the song selections, you can choose from some beautiful Spanish Christmas songs.
- Adeste Fidelis (O Come All Ye Faithful) guitar music
- Blanca Navidad (White Christmas) by a children’s choir
- Es Nochebuena (Deck the Halls) by Trio Nuevo Generation
- Frosty the Snowman played on the Xylophone
- Here Comes Santa Claus sung by an upbeat choir in English
No matter which site you choose this year, you’re sure to enjoy yourself browing around to find that perfect set of music you want to download. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas!
