As soon as you enter the education system, parents and teachers repeat the same thing: get good grades, get into a good college, and then get a good job. American students never really analyze exactly what they are being told, and attempt to complete these instructions without question. But do you really want to become just an average citizen partaking in average jobs? Do you really want to amass debt at an early age, try to dig yourself out in time to buy a house, and then try to pay off the mortgage while raising a family? I think not, so step back and think about where you really want to go with your life.

Time spent in school is time spent away from making money. You’re actually doing the opposite and losing money. Lots of it too. There are many successful people that never attended school and are better off than the majority of Americans due to their financial literacy. By learning the power of money at an early age, you can take whatever income you are earning, no matter how minuscule, and turn it into a fortune. You don’t need a college degree for this, what you need is an overall understanding of money. It’s not college that creates a financially stable life, it’s knowing money’s power and learning how to use it.

Alternatives to college?

Find a full-time job and try to work your way up to the top. Don’t set this as your lifetime goal, but keep it in the back of your head at all times. As you earn a paycheck, analyze market trends and invest your money. During this time, your fellow students will be in the classroom learning the material that they will be using later on in life, and that’s only if their chosen career still needs their known information.

You see specifying in a college degree just doesn’t seem logical anymore. Years ago, maybe, but nowadays the college system is flooded with students, all of which will have a degree and will soon be in search of employment. You, the college-omitted individual, will be employed by the same company for years now, have money saved, money invested, and well on your way to owning a home. Your degree-in-hand counterpart will be digging themselves out of debt, looking for a job, and living from paycheck to paycheck for many years.

So really think about your decision to spend thousands of dollars and many years on an education, and don’t just do it because that’s what you’ve been told to do your entire life. Financial literacy and real-world experience out values the classroom any day.
