Do you have separation anxiety when it comes to your clothes? Would you rather hang on to a designer dress that collects dust than see it shipped off in a garbage bag to be donated? I may have a solution for you…
A couple of months ago my friend Mo invited me over to raid her closet. She was doing some early spring cleaning and had a lot of clothes, shoes and accessories that she was ready to be done with. I sat in her room as she began to produce items from the depths of her closet. She would preface many of the items with, “You don’t have to take it if you don’t like it. I never wear it, but it might fit you.” Yet, my eyes lit up at most of the items she revealed. While most of the items were old to her, I looked at each item as a new piece to the puzzle that is my wardrobe. She had a story to tell for each piece and I imagined what I would pair each shirt with, and what dress I would wear with my new handbag. I ended up walking out of her house with 3 bags full of clothes that included some great grabs, like a pair of Prada pumps!
Sometimes it can be hard to part with clothes that you no longer wear, especially if they were expensive and still happen to be in great condition. I recently rounded up some clothes that I prized. I figured I could sell them at Plato’s Closet, but it seems that everyone and their mom had the same idea as me. I was bummed that I couldn’t get cash for some of the clothes I brought in. They were expensive brands that no longer fit me and they were in great condition. I like to donate a lot of clothes to Goodwill, yet there are some items that I prize even though they may no longer fit me.
So what’s a girl to do with these great items that no one will buy? I was on the phone with my friend Mo tonight, reminiscing about the night I raided her closet and we decided to have a “Garb Grab” where we would invite several of our friends to bring over prized possessions from their islands of misfit clothes. With the economy the way it is right now, it’s harder to part with items that once cost us a pretty penny, so why not let your best friends try them on for size? Pop open some bottles of wine and start trying on those clothes! Tell your friends about the fancy party worthy of that designer dress that hung in your closet so long, it may as well have a name on the mailbox. It will be easier to let go of the items once you see how excited your friend gets over a shirt you haven’t worn in over a year. Plus, you can take any of the leftovers back home with you, or donate the unwanted items to Goodwill.
So once this swine flu epidemic is over, gather up your girlfriends and treasured clothes for a day of clothes swapping fun.
PS: Sometimes I wear my Prada pumps over to Mo’s just so she can say hi…
