Without summer school, more parents will be home schooling their children

When a three-judge panel ruled that all California children had to be taught by credentialed teachers, including home teaching and several home-schooling organizations, there was a great deal of dissension. These groups felt that it was not necessary to hold a credential in order to teach. Therefore, it urged the appeals court to reconsider its ruling.

It was at this time, when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Democratic Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O’Connell and other politicians asked the court to reverse its decision.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger believes that every child in California has the right to a quality education and parents should be able to decide what’s best for their children.

Presently, because of the budget cuts, there will not be any summer schools in California. The only classes that will be open during the summer months will be for high school students who need extra help in their studies.

Many parents and teachers are disappointed that there will not be the usual summer schools that has existed for years. Some parents, however, are enrolling their children in private schools that are offering good rates.

The good news is that because of the new rule, more parents will no doubt teach their kids without having a credential this summer. Many parents have been home teaching their children at home and chances are that there will be more parents who will be home teaching this summer. Now, especially when there are so many job losses, parents will have something to keep themselves busy.

There has been a great deal of discussion as to why students are required to take Algebra in order to graduate high school. This discussion came about when it was realized that many students have difficulty in passing the test. After failing the test two or three times, they get so discouraged, they drop out of school and end up in the streets.

Suzie Le Monte, a home teacher, when asked if it was compulsory to teach Algebra, she answered, “Home teachers do not have to teach Algebra. We are really lucky that we can use different types of learning and teaching tools.”

Le Monte was happy that she could make up her own decisions as to how she is going to teach her son. She continued her opinion on the subject by saying, “If one method of learning doesn’t work, we can try something else. I even used Star Wars to better understand the basis of Physics.”

She said, “Although this may be an unconventional method in the public schools, but if you can break a subject down for a child, and give them something to compare it to, why not?”

She went on to say, “If you give something interesting, it shouldn’t matter how a subject is taught.” She continued her thinking by saying, “It’s more important that they understand and remember it.”

There are some exceptions to the rule of allowing parents to home teach their children. One is, because there have been abusive parents at times, Juvenile Court judges have the authority to order home-schooled children to attend credential schools for their safety.

I agree that parents who decide to home school their children shouldn't be required to be credentialed teachers. On the other hand, I feel that they should be required to prove that they are competent in the subjects that they want to home school their children in. They should be required to pass a test on the subject matter and upon passing that test be issued a certificate stating that they are qualified to home school in it. Teaching methods aren't a concern here but the content of instruction is very much a concern. Providing incorrect information on any subject is worse then no information at all. I'm not going to mention any names here but I know a young mother who, if she decided to home school her children in English would do more harm than good. The sad thing is that she feels that she has a firm grasp on the English language yet her verbal and written communications skills state the opposite. My wife, a retired schoolteacher, cringes every time this young woman tries to help her children with their homework. For her to home school would be a total disaster for her children. Good intentions aren't enough because the ones who will suffer if they receive improper instruction is the children and our children are our future so we have to protect them from receiving an inadequate education. As for Algebra, in today's highly technological world good math skills are essential and need to be taught. Back in the days when I was in school Algebra was considered an advanced math but that's no longer the case. Today Algebra is considered a basic form of math and every student needs to master it in order to be successful in today's world.

Good morning Harriet. I think that one of the problems today is that students don't see a connection between what they are being taught in the classroom and everyday life. Actually that's not a new problem because it existed to a degree in my day as well. I excelled in math, science and shop programs because they directly interfaced with my interests outside of school. I barely passed my courses in English, history, foreign languages, social studies, etc because I saw no need to learn them. I just didn't see how mastering the finer points of grammar, for example, would help me build a better ham radio transmitter and design a better stock car engine. I had no interest or thoughts of becoming a writer at the time so I saw no need to learn how to write like a writer. Kids today would take their classroom studies more seriously if the teachers and parents showed them how those studies will help them become better at what really interests them outside of school. The son of a very close friend was having a great deal of trouble with Algebra until I showed him how understanding math would help him build better radio controlled model airplanes. I simply rewrote his lessons substituting math problems related to aerodynamic for the numerical and word problems found in his textbook. He also loves to shoot pool with his father so he really took notice when I showed him how an understanding of geometry and trig would help him become a better pool player. I was doing 12th grade math when I was in the 6th grade because I found books that taught algebra, geometry, trigonometry and some calculus as applied to electronics I was also into model rocketry so I might have paid more attention to my English classes if someone showed me how that would have helped me record the results of my experiments in a more understandable fashion. Anyway, my whole point here is that I think that students would pay more attention in the classroom if their teachers and/or their parents would connect whats happening in the classroom with what they are really interested in outside of the classroom. There's always a connection but that connection isn't always obvious.

I home school My daughter and think if a parent has the time they should be able to do so. My daughter is so much further than the public school kids. Parents only have one shot at raising their kids why let some else do it if they can't do it right.
