You Can Be Whatever You Want to Be, Believe in Yourself and hit me for saying "GOD" too!
There is a song off Nelly’s "Brass Knuckles" CD "Believe In Yourself." Remember back in middle school those dreams you had. Mine, well I wanted to be a running back for the Redskins, then it was a guitar player for kiss. But as we grow older, we lose that energy, those dreams just sort of "grow up." But to be energetic, productive, and have that reason to do different things, we have to revitalize our goals, our ambitions. For many out there during this economic recession, career questions are popping up. To be real here if I may I say 401K is gay, and you should not worry about throwing thousands of bucks into a fund you have no control over, but some snudy Banker, who makes about a mil a day, is handling your account, screw that. Because by the time us "X Generators" hit 65, (if we get through ‘12) then it will be 2033, and probably you working as a greeter some where like Wal Mart and a Crossing Guard. No matter how old you might be there is a place for you to gleam.
Now I am writing to you to get you to get off the couch, drink some coffee and chase that dream with all you got! For me, I want to run for City Council. Now I might not win, but I am going to get in where I fit in to quote Too Short, or one of my Drill Sgts. Where do you want to be in five years. Have you thought of Scottsdale, I mean well taking a grand and doing what you can with it. Invest, let someone else do the leg work!
Other goals I have (God willing) are : City Council, Educational Administrator, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author, giving back to the community by teaching inner city kids once again (I mean that’s where I am from). Anyway, I am not trying to promote me, I am trying to promote you. A bartender at Henry’s in Charleston once told me years ago, "Cole How much are you willing to pay for your sanity?" This question Socrates probably asked his students because it is profound. Ask yourself, "How much do you really need to live?" "What truly makes you happy?" Is it teaching, playing golf, bridge, music, writing, sales, or power.
But as is everything we do, it comes with a cost. It seems the more ambitious I have been in life, the more of a loner it has made me. I do not pretend to ascertain whether it is right or wrong to be ambitious. I truly do not know why I seek a seat on City Council. As my dad used to say to me "Son Low Aim Not Failure is the Crime!" For those of you out there, every day with God’s help, aim as high as you can. If you miss or not reach a particular goal at least when you are at 65, you can look back and say, I came, I saw, I tried (thanks J. Caesar).
Sometimes we go against our boundaries with our goals or others expectations. In this dark time of recessionitis, I should be referring to ideas that will make you money, are you ready:
Grocery shop for customers via on-line. I mean man this will take off like a crack addict from a dry house! Two, cut grass for your neighbors, of course not for free. Hit Craigslist up for everything you do not need sell, I mean unlike Chinese and Egyptian Emperors of 3000-200BC, you can’t take it with you.
Get involved with your community. I live in a town of 30,000 people. Last night at our meeting, there was only about 20 people there (citizens), and people belly ache about the economy. Help your legislative elected officials. Look at what the first "Terminator" did; he is putting all the text books online, cutting millions of dollars from the budget of CA. Be innovative. We are taking our waste, and making profits out of it soon in Berkeley County.
I think the earliest childhood dreams are the ones most special and whether you agree or not, the one you need to pursue to achieve contentment. For me again it is running for public office. For you it might mean seeing the Louvre in Paris or changing careers. The Internet is a tool, if you really do your homework, might make you some cheddar down the road. But it is not going to happen over night. As it pertains to goals and keeping the status quo in this country, I am petitioning my respective lawmakers to gain jobs from China and India here. Trust me it is a pain in the you know what. But the day is coming and soon, where you will see China and India making cars here. I love this country too, I mean I even left the classroom to be a Combat Medic in Ramadi Iraq back in 2007.
"Never, Never, Never Give Up! Winston Churchill said that during WII. Wait a minute there is something I need to say now "Do it to them before they do it to you!" Machiavelli, or Flaggler said to J.D. Rockefeller during the early days of Oil Speculation in the late 19th Century. Pick a hero or heroine you identify with, be monotheistic "One God," and if certain artists inspire you, than try to emulate them. Life is a stage and we are mere players. I think Shakespeare wrote that one. As I am tying these words I picture myself in crowded Athens Greece drinking a cafe late, looking at the acropolis, and thinking, I dreamed this, I dreamed this. Here is another idea, borrow money, invest it via Scottsdale and then pay back the principle.- yeah and listen to "Hip-Hop" say your Hail Mary’s, and please if you own a restaurant in SC, do not make your customers listen to hicksville, never washed jeans Country Music. I don’t care how good Lee Ann Rhymes or Taylor Swift looks (all are too young for me anyway), is there some conspiracy ingrained in a program that states "You must play Country Music in All Bars and Restaurants in the Low Country of SC? For now on, I am going to take my money elsewhere if I hear one more Country music cry baby song again. How in the hell is this country going to ever improve its morale, literacy, without music that addresses real issues, forget romance, and is strong and upbeat, not adorned with Cowboy hats and belt buckles which were not earned in the first place. To be successful in life, you have to find a medium of expression that makes you get up and go. How does Country Music inspire anybody is beyond me? If I have to pick a tissue to listen to it, than what is the point. Life alone is sad and gravel enough than to have to eat with some more tragedies of life hitting your Etruscan canals. I am sorry I am Caucasian, and I do not think it is fair to have country music on every piped in music system. I am just going to have to have my I-Pod with Jazz, Classical Music, and Hip-Hop with a message. I truly believe country music makes a dark age of 21st century enlightenment. I do give a subliminal applause to Toby Keith for what he does for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now I understand that parts of Hip-Hop are gross, but they motivate me, the beats, the tempo? Am I wroing for attempting to squash the Country Music Cult! All I saying is, just have booths with ear pieces so people can listen to what they want to at a Restaurant. If I hear Lee Greenwood one more time, I think I am going to hurl.
If you can have smoking or non smoking rooms, than restaurants should provide the country side of the house and the Hip-Hop side of the house.
